Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) announced that it is offering its patented inflatable safety belt technology to several other companies and industries, including competing auto manufacturers. The license availability may lead to a wider adoption of inflatable safety belts as other auto companies are looking for ways to enhance passenger safety.
The technology could be used for other forms of seated passenger transportation like airplanes, helicopters, and water travel. During crashes, the inflatable safety belt deploys over a passenger’s torso and shoulder to distribute crash forces up to five times more area than traditional safety belts.
By spreading the pressure over a larger area, it could help reduce pressure on the passenger’s chest. It also helps control head and neck motion. The inflatable safety belt is available on the Ford Explorer, Ford Flex, Ford Fusion, Ford F-150, Lincoln MKT, and Lincoln MKZ.
