Former Nintendo President Hiroshi Yamauchi Passes Away

Posted Sep 19, 2013

Hiroshi Yamauchi is a man that is credited with turning Nintendo into the gaming giant that it is today.  Nintendo said that they are saddened by the “loss of the former Nintendo president Mr Hiroshi Yamauchi, who sadly passed away this morning.”

Yamauchi was named as the president of Nintendo in 1949.  Back then, Nintendo was a small playing cards company.  In 1963, Yamauchi renamed the company from Nintendo Playing Card to Nintendo.  Nintendo explored other business models like a taxi company, a TV network, and hotels.  The company started producing toys in 1966.

Yamauchi remained as president as the company went on to start building video game consoles up until around the time that the GameCube came out.  He was replaced by Satoru Iwata in May 2002.  Yamauchi was one of Nintendo’s largest shareholders.
