Geolocation check in service Foursquare has partnered with IFC to send push notifications about establishments that you are near by. Foursquare users can choose to opt in for these services or have it off. To collect data about certain establishments, the IFC polled their member base for descriptions of their favorite places in the towns that they live in or visited. When you check in to one of the recommended places, the IFC notification is sent.
The IFC isn’t the only one that has partnered with Foursquare on these notifications. The Wall Street Journal and The Huffington Post is also experimenting with Foursquare to send out news-based notifications given the location that you are in.
This is just the beginning of what could be a augmented reality social media craze. I’ve already heard of campaigns where the mayor of Starbucks on Foursquare receives coupons. Foursquare also has location-based coupons built in to the service. There is an unlimited number of possibilities that can take place by knowing when a person is near their business.
