Target Decides Not To Carry Frank Ocean’s “Channel Orange” Since It Was Released Earlier On iTunes

Frank Ocean recently released an album called “Channel Orange” and it appears that Target decided not to stock the album because it was released on week early exclusively on Apple iTunes.

“At Target, we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs,” said the company in a statement to MTV News, “so our selection of new releases is dedicated to physical CDs rather than titles that are released digitally in advance of the street date.”

Ocean’s manager Christian Clancy believes that there may be some discrimination involved here too.  “Target has refused to carry Frank’s album because of iTunes exclusive. Interesting since they also donate to non-equal rights organizations,” said Clancy in a tweet that was recently deleted.

Ocean recently posted an article on his website last week about how he had a previously relationship with another man.  The hip hop community expressed their support of Ocean openly coming out to the public.

Clancy’s tweet was referring to how Target donated $150,000 to an organization called Minnesota Forward, which is a political group that backed candidates across the state.  Tom Emmer was one of the candidates and he was a gubernatorial hopeful that supported an anti-gay ministry.  Shortly after that, Clancy said that he was emotional when he wrote that tweet.  The tweet said “note to self: take your own advice. emotional knee jerk reacting isn’t the move.”

Target responded to Clancy’s initial tweet by saying “The claims made about Target’s decision to not carry the Frank Ocean album are absolutely false. Target supports inclusivity and diversity in every aspect of our business. Our assortment decisions are based on a number of factors, including guest demand.” Target also noted that they have partnered with diverse artists like Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan, and B.o.B.

“Target has a longstanding tradition of supporting music and artistry that reflects the diverse landscape of American culture,” said Target.  MTV pointed out that when Jay-Z and Kanye West released their 2011 record “Watch The Throne” four days early on iTunes, many retailers were furious.  Target does sell “Watch The Throne” though.
