The World’s Largest Landfill Is Going To Become NYC’s Largest Solar Facility

Posted Dec 1, 2013

Freshkills Park was the world’s largest landfill as it received a majority of New York City’s garbage.  Now it is going to become a park that is around three times the size of Central Park.  Mayor Bloomberg said that it will become the city’s largest solar energy installation.  The solar facility is going to provide 10 megawatts of electricity, which is five times what the current largest solar installation produces and is enough to energize 2,000 homes.  The 47-acre solar complex is going to increase New York City’s renewable energy capacity by around 50%.  Around 35,000 solar panels will be installed and operated by Sun Edison with no cost to the city.
