Garmin has built a fascinating way for drivers to get directions to their destination. Garmin announced the first portable head-up display (HUD) today for smartphone navigation apps. HUD is a new way of viewing navigation in the car as directions are projected onto a transparent film on the windshield or an attached reflector lens.
The Garmin HUD offers comprehensive road guidance within the driver’s line of sight. HUD features can help increase safety and reduce driver distraction as a result. The HUD receives navigation information from a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone that runs on the Garmin StreetPilot or NAVIGON app.
“HUD redefines the navigation experience by allowing drivers to find their way without taking their eyes off the road,” stated Garmin VP of worldwide sales Dan Bartel. “Head-up displays currently have their place in select high-end cars, but HUD makes this technology available as an aftermarket accessory for any vehicle, at an affordable price.”
The HUD directions are easy to follow and allows drivers to navigate through challenging intersections. The HUD also displays turn arrows, distances to the next turn, the time of arrival, and the speed limit. The HUD also lets drivers know what lane to be in and alerts them when they exceed the speed limit. HUD also warns users of traffic delays and upcoming safety camera locations. The HUD display adjusts to the brightness level so the projections are clearly visible in direct sunlight and at night. Spoken turn-by-turn directions are provided as well. Music that is streamed to the car stereo from the smartphone will fade in and out for turn-by-turn voice prompts. HUD will continue displaying navigation information when taking calls too.
The HUD is easy to set up as users can display navigation information on their windshield with the included transparent film or the included reflector lens that attaches to HUD. The device pairs wirelessly with a compatible Bluetooth-enabled iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone 8 device.
Garmin HUD has an MSRP of $129.99. The Garmin StreetPilot and NAVIGON apps start at $29.99 for a regional map (NAVIGON U.S., Central, East or West).
