General Motors Company (GM) is going to build aluminum body trucks by 2018

Posted Feb 19, 2014

General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) is building aluminum-bodied pickup trucks and will be launching them by 2018 due to pressure from federal fuel efficiency standards, according to The Wall Street Journal.

GM also locked in supply contracts with Alcoa and Novelis. Both of these suppliers will increase their aluminum sheet production to supply the next GM pickup truck. Aluminum sheets for auto companies are in high demand and companies need to order it in advance.

Ford made the switch to aluminum already. The new F-150 body is 95% military grade aluminum alloy and weighs 700 pounds less than the current truck.
