Earlier this morning, a post was submitted to Reddit.com that gained a lot of traction. The post was submitted that claims to be an IT director for a major American company. The company urged other people on Reddit to make December 29th the day to transfer domain names away from GoDaddy to protest the company’s support of SOPA (Stop Online Privacy Act). The IT director said that he had already transferred 51 personal domain names and 300 personal ones in his capacity. GoDaddy currently hosts over 50 million domain names.
GoDaddy has previously released a statement that indicates their support of SOPA even though this opens up potential liability for themselves under SOPA. ?Go Daddy has a long history of supporting federal legislation directed toward combating illegal conduct on the Internet.?
In response to the customer exodus, GoDaddy posted their statement of SOPA that is dated October 28, 2011. ?Online copyright laws won?t prevent a flourishing Internet,? said GoDaddy. Name.com and HostGator are offering discount codes for people that are switching over from GoDaddy. CheezBurger Nation CEO Ben Huh sent out a tweet saying ?We will move our 1,000 domains off @godaddy unless you drop support of SOPA. We love you guys, but #SOPA-is-cancer to the Free Web.?
