Posted Apr 4, 2011

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has made a $900 million to acquire a portfolio of 6,000 Nortel Networks patents. Google has become the starting point for others, which is known as a “stalking horse” for others. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is spending $7.5 million to acquire 600,000 IP addresses from Nortel. And several other companies are buying Nortel’s patents individually. Microsoft already has a cross-licensing patent agreement with Nortel and it the change of ownership would not cancel anything. So if Google wins the patents, then Microsoft would become their cross-licensing partner. The patents cover wireless, wireless 4G, data networking, voice, Internet, optical, etc. [GeekWire]
