Google Takes On Yelp With City Experts Program

Posted Aug 3, 2013

On Friday, Google announced a program called City Experts.  City Experts offers perks to people that review local restaurants and other businesses on Google Maps.  In order to be a City Expert, you will have to be a Google+ user and must have submitted 50 high quality reviews.  They will also have to maintain five reviews per month to stay in the program.

“A high quality review is usually three to four sentences long and contains specific, helpful and balanced information about a particular business,” states Google on the City Experts page.

People that register for the City Experts program will receive an invite to an exclusive Google+ Community of other reviewers when they have written 50 reviews in Google Maps or more.  The reviews will appear in the Local section of Google+.  Google will send out a monthly e-mail that offers discounts, Google merchandise, and invites to special events.

The Google City Experts program is piloting in certain cities.  This includes Austin, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; New York City, New York; Phoenix, Arizona; Portland, Oregon; Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; and San Francisco, California.  The program is also available in the U.K. across the cities Bristol, Edinburgh, London, and Manchester.  It is also launching in Sydney, Australia; Tokyo, Japan; and Osaka, Japan.
