Today’s Google Doodle on the homepage represents the 66th anniversary of the UFO incident in Roswell, New Mexico. The homepage showcases the moment when it was claimed that an alien aircraft crashed in the Nevada desert. Witnesses saw a flying saucer in the sky above Roswell, New Mexico around July 8, 1947.
The actual events that took place are still debated today. There are also reports that alien bodies were found at the scene and was taken away by authorities. The U.S. Air Force claimed that the debris was from an experimental high-altitude surveillance balloon.
The incident from 1947 was made famous when physicist Stanton T. Friedman interviewed Major Jesse Marcel in 1978. Major Marcel claimed that the debris was from an alien aircraft. The U.S. government continues to deny the claims and the U.S. Air Force even released a definitive report on the subject in 1997 that was titled: “Case Closed: Final Report on the Roswell Crash”
The Google Doodle is actually a video that features an animated UFO and alien. As part of the game, the alien has to search for the parts of his spaceship to fly back home. You can actually control the alien by clicking on a part of the map to move him (or her?) around.
