The Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) Earth software has helped archaeologists find 1,977 potential digging sites, including 1,082 ancient stone tombs (pendants). University of Western Australia professor David Kennedy scanned about 500 square miles on the Arabian Peninsula using Google Earth.
Kennedy confirmed that the sites were ancient because he has an archaeologist friend in Saudi Arabia check it out and photograph them. Kennedy believes that the sites are about 9,000 years old but ground verification is needed to confirm. “Just from Google Earth it’s impossible to know whether we have found a Bedouin structure that was made 150 years ago, or 10,000 years ago,” said Kennedy.
