At the I/O conference, Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), announced that it will make manufacturing Android devices quicker and cheaper through a new set of hardware reference platforms called Android One.

Android head Sundar Pichai showcased an example using slides of the $100 Micromax Android One device. The initiative is similar to Microsoft’s reference design based on the Windows mobile operating system and using Qualcomm hardware.

The AndroidOne devices will be running stock Android versions and will receive automatic updates. Manufacturers will be able to add their own apps on top of that.

The Micromax device that was showcased has a 4.5-inch display, dual-SIM support, an SD card slot, and an FM radio. Karbonn Mobile and Spice Mobile will also make Android One phones.
