Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is opening a new and expanded 55,000 square-foot office space less than a mile from the U.S. Capitol. The office symbolizes Google’s growing political influence. Google has been the number two company in lobbying spending in two out of the past three years. It was number five last year, which makes Google the most active lobby company in the tech sector.
However, Google’s political spending transparency lags behind the openness of other tech companies. The new office in Washington D.C. is 25,000 square feet larger than Google’s previous office in Washington D.C. and is twice as close to the Capitol. The new office is close to the same square footage as the White House. The new office is located at 25 Massachusetts Ave., NW.
Google has spent an average of $1.4 million per month on federal lobby since 2012. Google was ranked third in lobbying spending amongst all companies behind Northrop Grumman and General Electric. Google provides funds to around 140 trade associations and groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and American Legislative Exchange Council.
