Google Is Not Acquiring WhatsApp

Posted Apr 9, 2013

WhatsApp is a company that has developed a cross-platform mobile messaging app called WhatsApp Messenger.  Earlier this year, we reported that WhatsApp processed around 18 billion New Year’s Eve messages.  According to Digital Trends, Google was rumored to be acquiring WhatsApp for $1 billion.  But the acquisition is not going to happen.

Neeraj Arora, WhatsApp?s business development head, confirmed in an interview in AllThingsD that they are not being acquired by Google.

Google is not the only company that was rumored to be acquiring WhatsApp.  Facebook was also interested in buying out WhatsApp back in December.  If the $1 billion price-tag for WhatsApp is accurate, then it would be around the same value as Instagram (acquired by Facebook exactly one year ago).

WhatsApp allows users to send messages free across multiple smartphone platforms.  The company launched in 2009 and has millions of users.  The app is currently the number one app in the Apple App Store across dozens of countries.  It has also been downloaded over 100 million times on Google Play.
