Google Maps Enhances Live Transit Information For New York, D.C. And Salt Lake City

Posted Mar 27, 2013

Google Maps has announced today that they have added the live departure times for seven lines on the NYC Subway system (MTA) and buses.  Google Maps is also now tracking the times for the subway in Washington D.C. (Metrorail) and trams in Salt Lake City (UTA).

“With these updates ? part of the millions of live transit schedule updates we process every day ? you get instant access to the latest information right on Google Maps, making trip planning a cinch,” said Soufi Esmaeilzadeh, Partnership Development Manager at Google Maps.

Esmaeilzadeh added that using transit information at Google Maps lets you find out pick-up locations, departure times, estimated travel times, and even the amounts for fares across 800 cities in over 25 countries in the world.  This information covers 100 million miles of daily public transit trips.

Metrorail users in Washington D.C. will be able to see live service alerts including delays and scheduled track work straight from Metro’s Control Center on Google Maps.  In the screenshot below, you will notice what the alert looks like:

This is just another way that Google Maps is improving geolocation for mobile users. You can download Google Maps from  Google Play or the Apple App Store now to get the public transit information.
