Google is phasing Google Currents in favor of a of their own Google Newsstand app. If you have heard of an app called Newsstand, you may recall it as the one that can be downloaded to your iOS device made by Apple. There is already an Android version of the Google Newsstand app and Google will be releasing a similar version for iOS sometime next year.
Despite the already existing name for an app, Google said that they decided to use the Newsstand name because it is the easiest way of describing what the app provides.
There are currently over 1,900 free and paid full-length publications that can be subscribed to or followed in the Google Newsstand. Google Currents launched in late 2011 to compete with services like Flipboard.
