Report: Google Inc (GOOG) received around 2,000 patents in 2013

Posted Jan 13, 2014

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has received almost 2,000 patents in 2013. This is a major jump from previous years. The patent information is based on an annual report created by research company IFI. For the year 2012, Google was ranked #21 on the list of the most patent filings with 1,151 new patents and Apple was ranked #22.

This list has been dominated by IBM every year, but Google is now believed to be in the top ten for 2013. In 2012, IBM filed a total of nearly 6,500 patents. Google was not ranked in the top 50 in 2011.

As the Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android platform aggressively grew, the company had to ramp up their patent portfolio. Many of Android’s hardware partners have had to sign out-of-court royalty deals with Microsoft. It is believed that Microsoft makes more from Android patent royalties than their own Windows Phone mobile platform. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) acquired Motorola Mobility to build Android smartphones and to access thousands of patents that are based on a broad range of technologies.
