Google penalizes for violating webmaster guidelines

Google has penalized for violating webmaster guidelines and using spammy tactics to rank high on Google search results. Google bumped RapGenius back several pages for even their own homepage along with the lyrics for many songs. RapGenius’ Twitter and Wikipedia pages now show up at the top instead of when searching for “RapGenius.” RapGenius’ founders wrote a public apology on their website because of the penalty.

“We effed up, other lyrics sites are almost definitely doing worse stuff, and we?ll stop. We?d love for Google to take a closer look at the whole lyrics search landscape and see whether it can make changes that would improve lyric search results,” said the RapGenius founders on their website.

So what did RapGenius do to violate Google’s webmaster guidelines? RapGenius asked bloggers to add tagged links to the Justin Bieber lyric URLs in exchange for the URL and exact text that the bloggers want tweeted.
