Google Play Now Has Digital Textbooks

Posted Aug 11, 2013

The Google Play store for Android devices now has digital textbooks available for download from large name publishers like Wiley, Macmillian, Random House, McGraw-Hill, and Cengage Learning.

Google announced that this feature was coming a few weeks ago when the Chromecast was announced.  Purchases of e-books will be stored in the cloud and you can read them on Android tablets, iOS devices, and on the web.

The textbooks can be rented for six months for around 80% off the regular purchase price.  There are some textbooks that are available for purchase only and some that are only available for rent.  You pay for the digital textbooks using Google Wallet.

The digital textbooks on Google Play are mostly static copies of the original text books and images.  Some of the digital textbooks have scanned pages that represents the printed versions of the textbook.  You can search within a textbook for words, phrases, bookmark chapters, etc.
