Today, at a Google event in San Francisco, California, the company announced that they are adding a new channel for digital textbooks to Google Play this August. The digital textbook addition is arriving just-in-time for back-to-school. Students will be able to buy and rent digital textbooks through the web, Android devices, and Apple iOS devices.
Google did not announce the textbook pricing for purchases or rentals. Google Play’s digital textbook section will have a comprehensive selection of titles from America’s five major textbook companies. Textbooks can be bought or rented for 6 months. Content will be sold at an 80% discount in some cases. Textbook subjects includes math, chemistry, law, accounting, etc.
?Instead of a 400 page doorstop, Google Play books brings you awesome new features like search, bookmarks, highlighting, notes and even night mode, so you don?t wake your roommate,? stated Google Play product manager Ellie Powers. Notes and bookmarks will be synced across all devices.
By launching this service, Google will be able to effectively compete against other digital textbook companies like Amazon.com and Chegg.
