Google TV has not been very popular with consumers and now Google is reportedly going to rebrand the platform. Google TV is reportedly going to be renamed “Android TV,” according to sources with GigaOM. GigaOM’s source is an executive working for a consumer electronics manufacturer that builds Google TV devices.
Google announced Google TV at the Google I/O event in May 2010 with partnerships with Sony, Logitech, and Intel. Google TV helped power the Internet on TVs, Blu-ray players, and set top boxes. Google TV was designed with Android 3.2 Honeycomb and it was limited to U.S. consumers.
The rebranding would not be a surprise because Google’s partners Sony, STMicroelectronics, and LG stopped using the Google TV brand name. However, these companies mentioned that their TVs would include Google services.
