Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has indicated that the company could partner with HBO, making customers excited about the possibility of watching shows like Entourage, The Sopranos, and Game of Thrones. However HBO made it clear that they do not have any intention of making a deal with Netflix. “We are not in discussions and have no plans to work with Netflix,” stated HBO spokesman Jeff Cusson.
HBO airs current and past shows like Boardwalk Empire and Sex and the City to their subscribers on HBO Go, an on-demand service on computers, smartphones, and tablets. HBO Go is considered a Netflix competitor. HBO recently refused to sell Netflix DVDs of “True Blood” and other shows at the wholesale price that they offer retail stores.
“While we compete for content and viewing time with HBO, it is also possible we will find opportunities to work together – just as we do with other networks,” said Hastings.
When Hastings mentioned the possibility of an HBO partnership, he told analysts “we’re just another network, and then when you have multiple networks, they often find ways of working together.” He added that there currently is not a deal on the table.
