How Seth Westphal Allegedly Attempted To Scam Kickstarter

Posted May 1, 2012

Seth Westphal allegedly attempted to scam Kickstarter. He launched a campaign called MYTHIC: The Story of Gods and Men, but he was ousted by users at Reddit, SomethingAwful, and Rock, Paper, Shotgun. The creators of this project claimed to be an indie studio called “Little Monster Productions.” They claimed to have done work on the World of Warcraft, Diablo 2, and Starcraft.

It turns out that the art they used was stolen and the text was copied and pasted from another Kickstarter project. The office photos were from another game studio called Burton Design Group.

The creators of the Kickstarter scam raised $4,739 of an $80,000 goal. They shut down the project and deleted the Little Monster Productions website 2 days ago.

?A few members of our team worked at BDG last year beforeother [sic] found out the owner was being shady with funds,? said the creators when the Kickstarter comments got heated. ?They left and joined our team shortly after. As for the concept art, it seems we have been subjected to false claims of ownership right to our concepts. The game itself is well in progress and is NOT a scam of any kind. Thank you for understanding. If you have any furthur questions please feel free to ask.? The project was shut down recently.

Alfonzo Burton of Burton Design Group said this in a note to Betabeat:
?I know the guy in the video. His name is Seth Westphal and he lives in Mission Viejo, CA.” Burton added ?He?s a former employee of Burton Design Group and stole our artists images and company studio images. I?m trying to spread the news of this guy so the industry can be on the look out.?
