How To Search The Internet From The Windows 7 Start Menu

Posted Feb 3, 2011

You may not know it, but the search box in the Windows 7 Start Menu has the ability to search the Internet. To get it going, you will need to change a setting in the Windows’ Local Group Policy Editor. This tool is not available in the Home version of Windows 7.

To open the Local Group Policy Editor, type in “gpedit.msc” in the search box and hit enter. Then go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar. Then double click the “Add Search Internet link to Start Menu” and hit “Enabled” in the window that pops up. Hit OK and then you can search “Google” right from the Start menu search box. Type in the search terms and hit Enter. Google will open in your default browser.
