Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) launched iMessage in 2011 with iOS 5. iMessage was considered Apple’s rival to BlackBerry’s BBM. At a recent Q&A, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that 40 billion iMessages are being sent out per day through iPhones, iPads, and iPods. In January 2013, the number of iMessages sent out per day was 2 billion.
This means that the number grew by around 20 times the amount in a year. By the middle of 2013, 900 billion iMessages went sent. Now they are hitting this number every 3 weeks or so. Apple also oversees 15 to 20 million FaceTime calls being made per day.
One of the reasons why Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion is because 50 billion messages were sent out per day through the mobile messaging app.
