Intel To Build Semiconductors For Achronix Semiconductor

Posted Nov 1, 2010

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) has made a rare deal with a start-up company. Intel will be designing several programmable chips with very high performance for Achronix Semiconductor Corp.

Intel agreed to manufacture chips using proprietary production methods that the company was not planning on using until late 2011 for Achronix. Intel ca create chips with circuit dimensions that measure 22 nanometers. By using Intel’s factories, Achronix hopes to gain performance advantages.

Achronix makes field programmable gate array (FPGA) chips. These chips are expensive to make and only companies that sell them in high volumes can afford to make them.

Intel spokesman Bill Kircos said that they want to see how Intel’s 22-nanometer process works in other products. Achronix’s chips from INtel will account for less than 1% of their production capacity.

Achronix raised $90 million in total funding since 2004. They have been selling 65-nanometer chips using Taiwan Semiconductor’s technology since 2008.
