Israeli Army Battles With Instagram Controversy

Posted Feb 22, 2013

An Israeli soldier has posted a photo a child with his back turned and a rifle scope aimed at him on Instagram.  The Israeli Army was heavily criticized by folks on the Internet as a result.  The photo was posted on January 25th by 20-year old Israeli soldier Mor Ostrovski.  The controversial photo shows the boy’s head zeroed in on through crosshairs.  It appears to be a Palestinian boy in a village.  Ostrovski took down the photo and his account has been deactivated.

?There are no other images to suggest that the photographer actually fired at the person in the image in this case,? wrote Ali Abuminah, a Palestinian activist, that runs a website called Electronic Intifada. ?The image is simply tasteless and dehumanizing. It embodies the idea that Palestinian children are targets.?

Abuminah posted other photos from Ostrovski’s Instagram account that includes him wearing a uniform and holding multiple weapons.  Ostrovski reportedly told his commander that he did not take the photo himself, but took it from the Internet.  He will not be disciplined for the action.

This is not the first time that Israel Defense Forces was in trouble for their social media actions.  This past November, the head of the IDF spokesperson’s social media unit was in trouble for posting a photo on Facebook with mud on his face.  He added a caption that said “Obama style” on the photo.
