Today is RoboCop Day in Detroit
and there will be a 10-foot bronze-casted RoboCop statue unveiled in the city today. The statue project was overseen by arts-focused nonprofit Imagination Station. The idea for the statue began around 3 years ago when a Massachusetts resident sent a Twitter message to then-Detroit Mayor Dave Bing.
The tweet said: “Philadelphia has a statue of Rocky & Robocop would kick Rocky’s butt. He’s a GREAT ambassador for Detroit.” Bing responded with: “There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop. Thank you for the suggestion.” The statue unveiling is part of a series of events that centers around RoboCop.
At 7PM, RoboCop will throw out the first pitch at the Detroit Tigers game in Comerica Park. It is unknown where the long-term home of the RoboCop statue will take place. The RoboCop DVD and Blu-ray release is also set for today.
Updated: The statue unveiling was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.
