U.S. President Obama and his administration has announced $140 million in federal funds will be used for two manufacturing institutes in Chicago and Detroit. Both of the institutes will be led by the Defense Department.

The Detroit institute will focus on lightweight and metals manufacturing. The Chicago hub will be used for digital manufacturing and design technologies. President Obama is looking for ways to help middle-class Americans raise their incomes. This will include an effort to expand manufacturing jobs.

President Obama introduced the manufacturing innovation institute in 2013 based on a German model that piloted in Youngstown, Ohio. President Obama has a goal of hitting 45 institutes total.
