Kik Hits 50 Million Users

Posted Apr 12, 2013

Kik is a messaging startup company based in Waterloo that has hit 50 million registered users.  The company is adding around 200,000 new users per day.  Recently Kik announced a new feature called Kik Cards, which lets users communicate through HTML5 applets within their messenger service.  Over 25 million Kik Cards have been installed so far.

Kik’s messenger app integrates with other social applications like Instagram, SocialCam, and Viddy.  Everyone that signs up can pick a unique username similar to the way Skype works.

Kik recently updated their iOS and Android app to version 6.3, which includes in-app push notifications.  This means that there will be an indication of a new Kik Card that has been sent to you by a contact.

Kik raised around $8 million in venture capital funding from venture capital firms RRE Ventures, Spark Capital, and Union Square Ventures back in March 2011, according to Crunchbase.
