King.com has announced that their game Candy Crush Saga is the top app on Facebook based on daily active users (DAU). Candy Crush Saga took down Zynga’s FarmVille 2 as the number one game. This is the first time that a King.com game has been this high based on data compiled by AppData. Candy Crush Saga has around 9.7 million DAUs on Facebook, which is ahead of FarmVille 2’s 8.7 million DAUs. The appeal of King.com’s games is that they are focused on casual gamers instead of gamers interested primarily in resource management.
“If you go back to 2010 and look at the top 10 games on Facebook, and then you look at 2011 and 2012 and then 2013, you’ll see that in January 2010 it was almost all resource management-type games,” stated King.com Chief Marketing Officer Alex Dale in an interview with Polygon. “In 2011 you have the first casual social title on Facebook, Bejeweled Blitz from EA, then in 2012 you have Bejeweled Blitz and Bubble Witch Saga from King.com, and in 2013 you have three King.com titles (Candy Crush Saga, Bubble Witch Saga and Pet Rescue Saga) as well as a couple of other social titles too.
Gamers have a tendency to pick something up and play a quick game with a puzzle element. Zynga still dominates overall when it comes to DAUs. Zynga’s games have 4 out of the top 10 games and King.com has 3. Zynga’s games comprise of 41.8 million monthly active users.
