LeapFrog Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE:LF), an educational entertainment company based in Emeryville, California, is debuting a wearable health-tracker for kids called the LeapBand. The LeapBand is designed for kids ages 4 to 7. It gives commands to kids like “wiggle like a worm” or “pop like popcorn” and rewards the activity by giving points that can be used for unlocking special game features.
After kids get a certain amount of points, they can redeem a virtual pet like cats, dogs, donkeys, or unicorns. The device can be connected to a website or app so that parents can monitor kids activities and select from a list of physical challenges.
?In 2014, we will introduce a new type of platform and other highly innovative new products with the goal of diversifying our portfolio and expanding our current categories,? stated LeapFrog chairman William B. Chiasson.
Since the LeapBand is collecting data from children, it must comply with federal regulations, which has special practices regarding the collection of data from children under 13. LeapFrog said it will provide the data to parents, but will not use it otherwise.
