Line is a mobile messaging application that has hit 200 million registered users. In January 2013, we reported that the service hit around 100 million users so that means that their user base doubled in about 7 months. This puts Line along the same lines as companies like WhatsApp and Viber.
Launched in June 2011, Line especially grew in Asian countries. The app’s popularity eventually expanded into other areas like Spain, India, and South America. Line supports messaging and VoIP calling. It is also known for supporting digital sticker packs and character emoticons that is sold for around $1.99 each. Over 750 million stickers are sent out per day.
The company generated around 30% of their Q1 2013 revenues from sticker packers, which is about $18 million. Since Line has been doing well with digital stickers, Path and Facebook started to add their own expressive emoji to their services.
Around 80% of Line’s registered users are active per month. One of Line’s biggest competitors, WhatsApp, has 250 million registered users.
