According to The Wall Street Journal, Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) Martin Eberhard has joined the advisory board of BRD Motorcycles in San Francisco, California. Eberhard said that BRD is not “trying to cobble together parts or buy their tech from Chinese or Italian motor suppliers. They have a world-class battery, one of the best I’ve seen. And they treat safety as a religion.”
BRD Motorcycles raised $1 million in seed funding to help commercialize their all-electric RedShift racing motorcycles. Before that, BRD raised $850,000 to change around the design of their battery technology. BRD’s batteries use small format cells instead of pouch cells. Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) uses the same strategy for their batteries.
BRD also has a partnership with BMW Motorcycles of San Francisco. BMW agreed to carry BRD’s motorcycles starting in 2014. The BRD RedShift costs consumers around $14,995 as the starting price, excluding federal and state incentives. The RedShift can go 0-60MPH in 3.3 seconds. Around 1,000 units of the RedShift will be starting in 2014.
