McAfee and Guardian Analytics Uncover Operation High Roller

Posted Jun 26, 2012

McAfee and Guardian Analytics has uncovered a global financial fraud scheme that uses an active and passive automated transfer system to grab money from high balance accounts in financial institutions. Large banks, credit unions, and regional banks worldwide are being hit by the attack. The criminals attempted to transfer amounts between $75 million and $2.5 billion to mule business accounts that belong to organized crime syndicates from at least 60 banks. “The advanced methods discovered in Operation High Roller show fraudsters moving toward cloud-based servers with multi-faceted automation in a global fraud campaign,” stated McAfee Labs director of security research David Marcus.
