Mercedes Is Testing Automatic Red Light Braking System

Posted Oct 5, 2009

Let’s say that you are accelerating way too fast towards a red light and you’re foot is still on the gas, this new Mercedes prototype sends the driver two warning signals to slow down and stop. If the driver is still distracted after the two warnings, the seat belts tighten and the car automatically stops. This is a project being conducted at the Mercedes research and development center in Palo Alto, California. When being interviewed, Mercedes R&D employee Gordon Peredo said that he expects this type of feature to be available in the real world sometime in the next decade.

Smart intersections communicate with the car to indicate when the light is red. In order for the technology to be fully rolled out, every intersection in America would need to upgrade to smart intersection status. And another problem is that the police would make less money too.
