At the Code Conference, Microsoft Skype VP Gurdeep Singh Pal and communications manager Diana Heinrichs demoed new real-time speech translation tool that will eventually be built into Skype.
The feature will be able to translate any foreign language into English. Pall was able to have a conversation in English while Heinrichs spoke in German.
Microsoft will launch the service initially with several languages and for the Windows version of Skype. Eventually more languages will be added along with support for other platforms.
Skype currently handles over three quarters of a trillion minutes of conversations annually. Microsoft is hoping that some users will allow Skype to crunch data that is needed for putting together translations.
