Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) went in front of the U.S. International Trade Commission this past week with an attempt to block Motorola Mobility from selling the Droid 2, Droid X, Devour, Backflip, and Cliq XT smartphones in the United States. Microsoft said that Motorola is infringing on 7 of their patents that relates to how a user interacts with contacts, e-mails, calendars, etc.
?We have a responsibility to our employees, customers, partners and shareholders to safeguard our intellectual property,? stated Microsoft corporate vice president and deputy general counsel for litigation David Howard. ?Motorola is infringing on our patents and we are confident that the ITC will rule in our favor.?
Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) announced that they will be acquiring Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion. Google saw the value in Motorola’s patents.
Motorola Mobility will be ?vigorously defending ? against Microsoft?s patent attack business strategy.? Motorola also said that they ?brought legal actions of our own in the U.S. and in Europe to address Microsoft?s large scale of infringement of Motorola Mobility?s patents.? The ITC ruling is expected to conclude on March 5th.
