Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has hired CloudeMade and OpenStreetMap (OSM) founder Steve Coast as the “Principal Architect for Bing Mobile.” He will also work as the liaison of the “open map community.” About 320,000 people have participated in the OpenStreetMap project.

In support of Coast, Microsoft will contribute Bing Aerial Imagery to the OSM. Microsoft said that ?[Coast] will help develop better mapping experiences for our customers and partners, and lead efforts to engage with OpenStreetMap and other open source and open data projects.? Mapquest donated money and developed a parallel set of websites on top of OSM data in the U.S. and Europe.
