Microsoft Corporation has launched Office mobile software for Android smartphones today. Basic editing can now be done on smartphones that runs on Android 4.0+. This follows the release of Office for iPhone.
The Android version is identical to what Office mobile has for iOS. You will need to sign into the application using your Office 365 subscription to view or edit documents. Microsoft is not offering a free version of Office Mobile.
Office for Android shows a recent documents tab, which lets you create and edit Word and Excel documents. Microsoft is optimizing their Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications. Currently there are no plans to launch Office Mobile for Android tablets. Microsoft is recommending users to utilize the Office Web Apps on tablets.
The editing feature on Office Mobile for Android includes correction, basic formatting, comments, and font colors. The documents are stored on Microsoft SkyDrive. Files can shared through e-mail on the Android app. Office for Android is now available in Google Play for U.S. customers – Microsoft will be expanding to 33 languages and 117 markets eventually.
