Microsoft Corporation will be acquiring Yammer for over $1 billion according to sources with the WSJ. It is uncertain when the acquisition will be completed. Yammer is often referred to as “Facebook for enterprises.” It is a private social network platform inside companies.
Yammer launched in 2008 and they also have file-sharing tools and other software. Yammer is known for integrating into Microsoft products like Outlook and SharePoint. Yammer raised $142 million in funding and they were planning on going public eventually.
Microsoft would integrate social features powered by Yammer into Microsoft Office through the acquisition. Microsoft SharePoint has similar features to Yammer. Yammer has 4 million corporate users, but only 20% of them are paying for Yammer services.
