Motorola has won a lawsuit against Microsoft in a patent lawsuit before a German court in Friday. A regional court in Mannheim has ruled that Google subsidiary Motorola Mobility did not infringe a Microsoft patent that allows applications to work on different handsets. This lets application developers avoid writing separate code for each handset, which saves time and development costs.
Many technology lawsuits have been filed in Germany because court actions there are cheap and quick than other jurisdictions. Microsoft won three patent lawsuits against Motorola in Germany.
“This decision does not impact multiple injunctions Microsoft has already been awarded and has enforced against Motorola products in Germany,” stated Microsoft associate general counsel David Howard.
Google acquired Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion last year, which was their largest acquisition ever. Through the acquisition Google now owns an additional 17,000+ patents.
