Mozilla is reportedly going to launch a device with the Firefox OS built-in. The new smartphone will cost only $25, according to The Wall Street Journal. Getting people to use the Firefox OS will be a challenge for Mozilla because Android and iOS are the two dominant mobile operating systems today. Each of them have large app stores that complement the mobile operating systems as well.
In the last quarter of 2013, Android had 78% of smartphone usage and Apple iOS was at 18%. The rest was divided between BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and other small operating systems. The $25 smartphone will be sold in emerging markets like India and Indonesia.
Feature phones are still the most used devices in those countries because they are really cheap. The low price of the Firefox could really disrupt the mobile market in emerging countries though.
