NBC has announced yesterday that the London Olympics coverage was the most watched sporting event ever on American television across the 17-day event. NBC said that 219.4 million viewers tuned in, which is about two-thirds of the country population.
This number is higher than the Beijing Olympics, which hit around 215 million viewers. The closing ceremony hit 31 million views on Sunday night. This was the largest audience for an Olympics held outside of the U.S. in 36 years and it topped the audience for the Beijing closing.
NBC shows like “Today” and “Nightly News” saw their ratings shoot up past their primary competitor ABC. “Today” surpassed ABC’s “Good Morning America” to 1.6 million.
