Netflix is currently in talks with cable companies like Comcast and Suddenlink Communications to have a streaming application integrated in set-top cable boxes. The talks are preliminary and it seems unlikely that a deal will happen because cable companies compete against online streaming services.
Netflix currently does not have any partnership of this kind in the U.S., but they do have this type of deal with Virgin Media in the U.K.
One of the setbacks in the negotiations is that Netflix wants the cable boxes to integrate special streaming protocols of the Netflix Open Connect program and that certain Netflix servers should be allowed to connect to the cable providers’ networks. The cable companies do not want to set a lenient precedent in case they want to partner with other streaming services in the future that would have other demands.
