Netflix Signs Exclusive Deal With Disney For New Movies

Posted Dec 4, 2012

Netflix, the video subscription service, has made an exclusive deal with Disney.  Now Netflix can play Disney movies shortly after they finish their run in theaters.  The multiyear licensing agreement was announced today.

This is the first time that a major Hollywood studio has sold the rights to Netflix instead of a premium TV network like HBO, Showtime, and Starz.  Starz has the rights to Disney movies under a deal that expires in 2015.

Starting in 2016, Netflix will be able to show Disney movies 7 months after they leave theaters.  Netflix did not reveal how much they are paying Disney.
