The chairman and CEO of Netgear did an interview recently where he heavily criticized Apple and Microsoft. Lo said that Apple’s closed model had only worked because “they own the market” for MP3 players. Lo said that this is only temporary. “Once Steve Jobs goes away, which is probably not far away, then Apple will have to make a strategic decision on whether to open up the platform,” stated Lo. “Ultimately a closed system just can’t go that far … If they continue to close it and let Android continue to creep up then it’s pretty difficult as I see it.”
Lo said the industry saw this happen many times like the Betamax vs. the VHS video format war, Windows vs Mac, and networking protocols that attempted to compete with TCP/IP. Lo said that Jobs was trashing Adobe Flash because of “ego.” “What’s the reason for him to trash Flash? There’s no reason other than ego,” said Lo.
When asked whether Lo would talk to Jobs about his concerns, he said that the Apple CEO does not even give him a minute. It wasn’t just Apple that Lo decided to bash. “Microsoft is over – game over – from my point of view,” said Lo.
