The most stunning feature in the new Apple iPad is Retina Display. Making the iPad Retina Display has been a challenge for Apple’s manufacturing partners. The manufacturing partners are utilizing advanced technology like Super High Aperture (SHA) pixel design and they have packed in double the LEDs for backlighting.
NPD Group’s DisplaySearch has provided insight on how Apple was able to pack a 2,048×1,536 screen in a blog post. Samsung, Sharp, and LG are Apple’s manufacturing partners. The three manufacturing companies are relying on a production process known as “a-Si TFT.”
Richard Shim of NPD Group said that the 264 pixels-per-inch placed in the iPad’s 9.7-inch screen is believed to be at the upper limit of pixel density for a-Si TFT. By doubling the pixel density in the new iPad, manufacturers have been forced to double the number of LEDs for backlighting. Shim said that the new screens likely have at least 72 LEDs, which could result in a significant increase in power consumption.
“The slightly larger and heavier case as compared to the iPad 2 suggests Apple is using a larger battery in order to accommodate the high resolution display with more LEDs than the previous generation, without decreasing battery life,” said Shim.
