Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has announced two new iPhone designs. The new designs are the iPhone 5c and the iPhone 5s:
The iPhone 5c has colorful options. This includes lime green, yellow, pink, blue, and white. The iPhone 5c back and sides are made from a single part so you will not see seams, part lines, or joins. It looks just like a plastic iPhone 5. iOS 7 was designs to match the iPhone 5c because the wallpapers match the phone’s color.
The iPhone 5c has a 4-inch Retina display, integrated touch layer, A6 processor, and a battery that is slightly larger than the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5c also has the same 8-megapixel rear camera. The iPhone 5c has a new FaceTime HD camera on the front and larger 1.9µ pixels.
Apple also built custom cases with a soft-fell silicon rubber. There are circular cut out patterns so that you can see the original color underneath. The cases are made out of hard-coated polycarbonate material.
The iPhone 5c is $99 for 16GB and $199 for 32GB with a two-year contract. The cases are $29 each.
The iPhone 5s is available in slate, gold, and silver. The LED looks bigger. The iPhone 5s uses a brand new system-on-a-chip called A7. The A7 chip is 64-bit, which is the first ever on a smartphone. iOS 7 also runs on 64-bit as well.
The iPhone 5s’ A7 chip has 2x general-purpose registers, 2x floating-point registers, 102 mm2 die size, and over 1 billion transistors.
iOS 7 has been reengineered to support 64-bit and Apple’s apps are also 64-bit. XCode supports 64-bit so developers should be able to easily upgrade. The iPhone 5s can still run older 32-bit apps. The iPhone 5s is twice as fast in speed with a 40x CPU performance bump and graphics are 56x faster.
The new iPhone 5s also runs OpenGL|ES 3.0. With OpenGL|ES 3.0, developers can add beautiful lens flare to their games.
The iPhone 5s has a motion co-processor called the M7. The M7 continuously measures motion data and enables a new generation of fitness apps. The M7 can tell apps if you are stationary, walking, or driving. The M7 measures the accelerometer, compass, and gyroscope.
The battery life on the iPhone 5s has 10 hours of 3G talk time, 8 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of LTE browsing, 10 hours of WiFi browsing, 10 hours of video, 40 hours of music, and 250 hours of standby time.
The camera system has a new five-element Apple-designed lens with an f/2.2 aperture. The sensor has a 15% larger active area. The pixels are 1.5µ. The new software in iOS 7 has been designed to take advantage of the new sensor. The camera app in iOS 7 sets the white balance, exposure, autofocus matrix metering, and dynamic local tone map. When taking a photo, the app takes multiple photos and picks the best one.
The new flash has two LEDs. One is a cool LED and one is a white LED. The other is warm and amber. The iPhone 5S can combine the two LEDs to get the right color balance from the flash. The camera has a new burst mode at 10 frames per second.
Slow-motion is coming to video recording on the iPhone 5s at 120 fps. The camera captures HD video at 720p at 120fps.
Apple said that the most common way to set up security on the phone has been to set a passcode. Apple has announced a new feature called Touch ID. Touch ID uses your fingerprint.
The Touch ID Sensor is 170 microns thin, senses 500ppi, and scans your sub-epidermal skin layers. It can read in any orientation and it is built right into the home button.
The Sensor is built into the home button and uses sapphire so that it does not scratch. You just have to touch the home button to unlock the phone. You can use your fingerprint to buy apps on iTunes as well. Touch ID also supports multiple fingerprints. It uses capacitive touch to read fingerprints.
The fingerprints are encrypted and secured inside an enclave. The fingerprint is never available to other software and is never uploaded to Apple’s servers.
The price of the iPhone 5s on two year contracts are:
– $199 for 16GB
– $299 for 32GB
– $399 for 64GB
Pre-orders start on September 13th. One week later on September 20th, you can buy the phones in the U.S., Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. The iPhone will also be launched in 100 countries and 270 carriers by the end of the year. In Japan, the new iPhone will be available on Softbank, KDDI, and NTT DoCoMo.
